A lecture for the 2024 Saskatchewan Association of Architects Annual Conference
An extended conversation with Neil Leach of Digital Futures World about the perils of A.I. We cover, at length, my own concerns about how rapidly advancing automation threatens livelihoods and potentially the professional sovereignty of those in AEC industries.
A great conversation with Bob Fisher on the DesignIntelligence podcast "This is Design Intelligence" My career has been full of ‘detours’ and Bob challenged me to identify the ‘red thread’ that connects my work in humanitarianism, design education, advocacy, disaster/resilience and design futures. Spoiler alert: there are several. But if I had to sum it up in a word, it would be ‘design.’ I believe that design remains the most powerful tool we have for confronting humanity’s most serious challenges. It has the potential to heal us from any past crises (like #naturaldisasters), and ameliorate (or fully eliminate) the effects of forthcoming ones (like #ai, maybe ;-)). Design is the Swiss Army knife of cognition. Use it for good!
A lecture I gave recently about the intersections of A.I. and Real Estate, and how A.I. is poised to disrupt the AEC value chain
A lecture I gave back in the day about resilience methodologies. Interestingly, this lecture was given the same day Superstorm Sandy hit the East Coast. Please try to ignore the beard.
A little lecture I gave from the back of a truck over the rough streets of Port au Prince, on the role of architects in disaster. It was my first, and last, drive-by lecture. The moment where I learned that bumpy roads make for good theatrics and terrible audio.
Had a great occassion to speak with Enoch Sears of Business of Architecture a while back. A great blog, if you don't follow it. While I'm not an architect, and don't have a business, our conversation was lively. Have a listen.
A nice little film by the Shelter Media Project, with further ruminations about design and disaster
A little talk I gave once upon a time about the value of design, and pizza.
all of these talks were not recorded, but were really, really good. Contact me for details.
